Located in the Northwest part of Azerbaijan, Sheki is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site that is a must-visit. It is surrounded by beautiful Caucasian countryside, making it a gorgeous image of nature. Dating back to the 7th century, Christianity was very widespread, and the main religion in Azerbaijan before the Arab conquest brought Islam to the country. Some areas in the country are still densely populated with Christians, such as the village of Nij, home to an ancient Christian group of people called the Udis. Every Sunday, they gather together in a restored 17th-century church to keep their community thriving. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in Azerbaijan’s heritage is by visiting the several ancient churches located all over the countryside.

The entire north of the country is covered with magnificent mountainous areas, filled with fascinating mountain villages populated by many multicultural peoples. Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, is home to some incredible modern architectural masterpieces that create the legendary Baku skyline. The distinctive skyline has transformed over the past few years and is a breathtaking scene when approaching the capital city. The main buildings to keep an eye out for are the famous Flame Towers, Heydar Aliyev Centre and the Carpet Museum.
The gorgeous Caspian Sea coastline stretches over 500km of Azerbaijan and provides wonderfully scenic views from the north all the way down to the south. You’ll find several sun-soaked beaches just a short 30-minute drive from Baku. It is a real treat in the summer, with the golden sands of the Absheron Peninsula having a real buzz with luxury resorts and local seafood restaurants coming to life for the season.
