Heathrow rail engineering works: 16 & 17 November

Due to planned engineering works, there will be no Heathrow Express or Elizabeth line services to or from Heathrow on Saturday 16 November and Sunday 17 November.

Piccadilly line services will be running as normal on both days.


Passengers should plan their journeys before travelling, and allow for additional time where necessary as trains that are running will be much busier than normal.

Concert in the Arctic Cathedral

One of the most famous landmarks in Tromsø is the iconic Arctic Cathedral. The notable building is a truly eye-catching sight with its stunning structure inspired by ice and snow.

The church features a gorgeous east-facing glass mosaic design which creates a glistening glimmer when the city’s famous Midnight Sun shines through it. 

With that in mind, the best time to visit the prominent site is at night when Midnight Sun concerts are held. These are held during the summer month and start at 11pm with a wonderful compilation of Norwegian folk tunes and classical music. It is a great opportunity to enjoy some spectacular sounds while witnessing the Midnight Sun.

Nab a glimpse of the Northern Lights

You can’t visit Tromsø without trying to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. It is one of the best places in the world to witness the wondrous natural phenomenon thanks to the city’s northern location, which is just 350km from the Arctic Circle.

The best time of year to visit Tromsø with the hope of seeing the Northern Lights is between September and April. It’s also best to venture a bit out of the city to avoid excessive light pollution that may hinder your view.

Tromsø has several Northern Lights tours and excursions to choose from. There is also an annual Northern Lights festival that is held during the last week of January and the first week of February, celebrating international dance and music.

Slide down some slopes on a reindeer or husky sled

Arguably, one of the best ways to explore Tromsø and the surrounding areas is by sled. And luckily for you, the city is full of them as they are such a popular and exciting activity, especially during the winter.

There are fun reindeer sledding tours that take place where you can also learn about the Indigenous Sámi people who traditionally herd reindeer. The tour includes a hot meal in a Sámi tent and the chance to feed the reindeer, too.

If reindeer aren’t your thing, then you can catch a ride on a dog or husky sled instead. There are even tours and excursions that combine husky sled rides and reindeer feeding for a great combined experience. you can even go hiking in search of the Northern Lights!
