Change Hearts. Change Minds. Change Lives. Wear Red.
Wear Red Day, the annual awareness day run by the UK’s largest anti-racism educational charity, Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC), returns on Friday 21st October 2022. Heathrow continue to show solidarity with the charity by turning the terminals red and inviting colleagues to wear something red on the day.
SRtRC are working with the en-haNCE Network, Heathrow Airport’s Network for Culture and Ethnicity, to stand together against racism by making a visual statement that discrimination will never be tolerated.
About the Charity
Show Racism the Red Card was established in January 1996, thanks in part to a donation by the then Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.
In the 1990s, Shaka was at a petrol station near St James’ Park, Newcastle when he was confronted by a group of young people shouting racist abuse at him. After one of the group realised that they had been shouting at Shaka Hislop, the Newcastle United football player, they came over to ask for an autograph.
It was this experience that made Shaka realise he could harness his status as a professional player to make a difference. Coupled with the power of football and his status as a role model, Shaka thought education could be an effective strategy in challenging racism in society.
Diversity & Inclusion at Heathrow
Heathrow’s Head of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, Adam Sunderland, and EDI Manager, Paul Johnston share their thoughts: "Every single day at Heathrow, as Britain’s front door, we welcome millions of passengers with a range of backgrounds, experiences, and identities. Diversity is at our heart; it makes us stronger and allows us to deliver the best possible airport service in the world.
We believe in making Heathrow ever more inclusive, and so are proud to support the annual 'Wear Red Day' and use the opportunity to emphasise the "Show Racism the Red Card" message that racism has no place at Heathrow or in society."
