Heathrow rail engineering works: 16 & 17 November

Due to planned engineering works, there will be no Heathrow Express or Elizabeth line services to or from Heathrow on Saturday 16 November and Sunday 17 November.

Piccadilly line services will be running as normal on both days.

Passengers should plan their journeys before travelling, and allow for additional time where necessary as trains that are running will be much busier than normal.

The New Year is upon us, and nothing beats the winter blues and post-festive gloom than a cheeky getaway for some much-needed winter sun. Lucky for you, Heathrow flies to the best European spots in the world, and here are some of our top picks to top up on some Vitamin D this winter.

Tenerife, Spain

Out of all the Canary Islands, Tenerife experiences the least amount of rainfall and the longest stretches of sun during the colder months of the year, making it an ideal destination to ride out the winter. Visitors flock to the Spanish island all year round due to its relaxing and welcoming atmosphere, which only becomes more appealing in the winter.

The average temperature in Tenerife is 20 degrees from November to January, making it much warmer than many other parts of Europe that face much colder climates during those months. It is comfortable weather to sunbathe on the beach and explore the island in shorts and a T-shirt.

One of the best ways to fully explore the island of Tenerife is by renting a car and travelling around to take in some breath-taking scenery. Masca Village and Anaga Country Park are both must-visits for those who want to delve into nature and are wildlife enthusiasts.

Malta, Malta

If you want to get away from the long, grey, and gloomy days of winter, there is no better place than Malta, with a sensational seven hours of daily sunshine in January. Malta has it all, from relaxing spots to bask in the sun to cultural activities that’ll help you appreciate this unique island.

You won’t be short of things to do on this quaint and sunny island, wander around the streets and appreciate the elaborate architecture, or take a stroll on the gorgeous coastline, home to charming harbours and fishing villages.

The best thing about visiting Malta in the winter, other than the sublime sunshine, is that the low season means fewer crowds, so you are able to pay a visit to the impressive nine UNESCO World Heritage sites that are nestled on the small island. There is so much to do and appreciate in Malta during the winter.

The Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve in Portugal is an extremely popular destination in the summer with its stunning scenery and notable culinary delights, making it a fantastic holiday for those on the hunt for some winter sun in a popular holiday destination.

The average temperature in the Algarve during winter is 19 degrees, and its sunny climate makes it an absolute delight to get some much-needed vitamin D in the colder winter months.

This southern region of Portugal is home to some of the most sublime blue-watered beaches that make it easy to sit back and relax in the sun. The Algarve is also renowned for having some of the best-tasting food and wine, which can be enjoyed on a tour to really experience the best of it.

Nice, France

Nothing screams class and elegance than a cheeky winter trip to the South of France for some sun and sophistication. Head to the renowned Riviera and spend a few days in chic Nice for a taste of the high life while enjoying the lovely warmer climate.

Nice is historically a place to escape to for some winter sun with an area being called Promenade des Anglais, named after several English aristocrats that would visit the charming city in the colder months during the 19th century.

The old quarter, called Vieux Nice, is filled with quant cobbled streets that are lined with boutiques, galleries and restaurants. For a more relaxing and laid-back trip, Monaco and Monte Carlo, two of the most famous French beaches are easily accessible and great for topping up your tan.
