Heathrow rail engineering works: 16 & 17 November

Due to planned engineering works, there will be no Heathrow Express or Elizabeth line services to or from Heathrow on Saturday 16 November and Sunday 17 November.

Piccadilly line services will be running as normal on both days.

Passengers should plan their journeys before travelling, and allow for additional time where necessary as trains that are running will be much busier than normal.

Airlines and routes,

As Air Astana celebrates its 20th anniversary here at Heathrow, we find it very fitting to shout out the national airline of Kazakhstan and uncover some of the wonders of this fascinating country. Flying directly to Kazakhstan is a piece of cake from Heathrow, as regular flights land in Aktau and Almaty. From there, it is very easy to reach other domestic destinations in the country and explore it at your own pace. Here are some of the top things to do in this Asian nation.

Kolsai Lakes National Park

Kazakhstan is full of incredible natural beauty and breath-taking scenes of nature. One place that really encapsulates this is the Kolsai Lakes National Park. It is comprised of three absolutely stunning lakes that are lined with steep mountains for an Alpine-esque scene.

It is the ideal place to visit during the warmer months and for those who love a good old hike and getting in touch with nature. You can trail between each lake, picking wild strawberries and raspberries on the way while taking in the spectacular views all around you.

After a long hike you can sit alongside the lake and gaze up towards the impressive mountain tops surrounding you. This is an absolute highlight in Kazakhstan and one of the best ways to appreciate this beautiful country.

Charyn Canyon

Another incredible and impressive natural wonder to uncover in this country is the great Charyn Canyon. Formed over thousands of years, this 300m deep canyon is another breath-taking sight that will leave you in awe.

It was formed from the famous Charyn River, which, over the years, carved this striking canyon and created some dazzling colourful rock formations. It is located 200km east of Almaty and is well worth a visit if you are in Almaty and up for a unique adventure.

The most popular section of the canyon is the Valley of Castles, which is easily accessible by car. However, if you want to explore the rest of the canyon, you will need to do so in a four-wheel drive vehicle due to the steepness and uneven surfaces. Exploring this wonderful canyon is a remarkable experience and one you won’t forget in a hurry.

National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan

If you want to take a break from exploring the great outdoors and would rather learn more about the history and culture of Kazakhstan, then a visit to the National Museum of Kazakhstan is an absolute must. It is a distinctive blue-glass and white-marble building that is filled with everything about the country from ancient to modern times.

The museum is comprised of themed halls lined with alluring interactive displays and artificial exhibits that take visitors on an engaging journey through Kazakhstan's history and cultural significance.

One of the main things to see in the museum that is considered unmissable is visiting the Golden Hall, home to an array of Bronze Age ornaments from the iconic ‘Golden Man.’ He was a 4th Century warrior whose gold-clad remnants were discovered in 1969; he is now considered a national symbol of Kazakhstan.
