Heathrow rail engineering works: 16 & 17 November

Due to planned engineering works, there will be no Heathrow Express or Elizabeth line services to or from Heathrow on Saturday 16 November and Sunday 17 November.

Piccadilly line services will be running as normal on both days.

Passengers should plan their journeys before travelling, and allow for additional time where necessary as trains that are running will be much busier than normal.

Detroit Institute of the Arts

The Detroit Institute of the Arts is one of the top things to see in the city and the highlight for most visitors. It is one of the most notable cultural spots in Detroit and provides art lovers with an array of beautiful pieces to admire and enjoy.

Otherwise known as the ‘temple of art,’ this massive building is home to over 100 galleries, a huge auditorium that seats over 1,000 people, and a 380-seat lecture hall.

It hosts a very impressive permanent collection of art, including pieces such as Van Gogh’s ‘Self Portrait’ painting and Rivera’s ‘Detroit Industry' piece. These sit among hundreds of other notable pieces of art hung proudly on the walls of the building. Visitors can also enjoy events that the institute hosts, such as concerts and art + author book discussions.

This one is for the foodies who are ready to whet their appetite during a trip to Detroit. The famous Eastern Market has been open since 1891. It sits over a 43-acre district, 6 blocks devoted to the public market.

It is famous for being the largest historic public market district in the United States. So, not only is it for foodies, but it is also a great place for historic buffs to visit and learn more about the fascinating history of this city.

The Eastern Market is home to hundreds of local farmers and merchants, showcasing fresh local produce and other market-worthy goods. It is a great place to grab a few souvenirs and a bite to eat before continuing your exploration of the city.

Detroit’s Fox Theatre

Another must-do in the city is catching a performance at Detroit’s Fox Theatre. The National Historic Landmark hosts various events, from Broadway musicals to performances by some big-name recording artists.

Aside from the wonderful shows and performances, the building has a truly impressive and jaw-dropping interior that captures attention from the moment you step foot through the door.

The walls are decorated with gorgeous gold leaf designs, and colourful paintings of flowers, people, animals, and more are scattered throughout. On top of this, the seats are eye-catching plush red velvet, and there is a striking giant elephant head sculpture to marvel at, too.

Comerica Park

Last but certainly not least, this is one for the sports fans, specifically the massive American sport of baseball. Comerica Park is home to the famous Detroit Tigers and is a huge ballpark where sports lovers can watch a game and immerse themselves in the buzzing atmosphere.

The best thing about Comerica Park is that it’s for visitors who aren’t too big on sports as well as absolute sports buffs. Casual onlookers who aren’t too interested in the game can enjoy the park’s other attractions, including an impressive 50-foot Ferris wheel, a carousel, a food court, and a beer hall. There is even a water feature synchronised to music, which sits in the centre field.

Many devoted baseball fans who visit the iconic stadium boast about its easy-to-navigate layout and skyline views, which add to its charm and character.
