New visitors to Bergen can’t help but be drawn to the wonderfully colourful aspects of Bryggen, a 14th century Hanseatic wharf of both cultural and economic significance punctuated by romantic wooden buildings and a famously friendly fish market teeming with aquatic treasures.
Your eye will naturally be drawn upwards, too. Known in Norway as the “city of the seven mountains”, Bergen has an abundant coastline on one side and a looming set of peaks to the other.
The easiest to reach is Fløyen by a funicular, Fløibanen. It only takes 6 minutes to reach the very top – 320m above sea level – where you can enjoy the view, restaurant, cafe, shops and children’s play area. Or hike further into the mountains.
Bergen is also home to several cruise companies all keen to show off the wonders of the famous Norwegian coastline. The Hurtigruten is one of the more extensive tours reaching the coast’s northernmost point and connecting 34 key communities along the way.
And then there’s the aquarium, concert hall, KODE museum, Fantoft Stave Church, Old Bergen Museum and the Bergenhus Fortress to explore when you get back. In Bergen there really is something for everyone.
