The Engineering Apprenticeship scheme helps you build the skills and experience to become an electromechanical technician at Heathrow. You’ll earn while you learn, working alongside experienced engineers and gaining a recognised qualification.
Heathrow is a city within a city. Every year, millions of people pass through the airport, and as an engineering apprentice you’ll be part of the team that keeps everything moving.
You’ll work at the heart of a complex, fast-moving operation, helping to maintain and support assets such as:
🛫 runways and airfield systems
🛄 baggage and terminal systems
💡energy, water and rail infrastructure
You’ll learn on the job, supported by experienced engineers, while building practical skills that set you up for a long-term engineering career.
• earn a salary while you learn
• work on real airport assets such as terminals, baggage systems and airfield infrastructure
• build practical skills through hands-on maintenance, testing and fault finding
• gain the experience needed to progress into a qualified engineering role
We look after more than 500,000 assets across the airport. That means plenty of hands-on experience, real responsibility, and projects you can be proud of.
We’ve been running engineering apprenticeships for almost 50 years, and for many people it’s a proven route into a long-term engineering career at Heathrow, with over half of our current engineering workforce having started as apprentices and more than 95% offered a permanent role on completion.
You’ll complete an externally accredited apprenticeship, including:
• BTEC and NVQ Level 3 qualifications
• The opportunity to progress to a Level 4 HNC
You’ll combine classroom learning with practical experience, supported by expert mentors throughout the programme.
We’re looking for people who are curious, committed and ready to learn.
You’ll need:
✔ GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above in Maths, English and Science
✔ To be aged 16 or over
✔ To be willing to work shifts once you turn 18
We’ll also consider applicants with higher or further education qualifications, or relevant engineering foundation courses.
Alongside qualifications, we’re keen to see evidence of:
✔ Teamwork
✔ Problem-solving
✔ A strong work ethic and motivation to do your best
Screening and online tests: throughout March → Assessment centre: 7–10 April (fixed dates) → Start date: early September
